Tips to reduce plastic waste

Hello everybody and welcome back! 🙂

The Ocean cleanup started on the 8th of September 2018 and it is one of the best news of 2018. The number of plastic waste in our ocean is shockingly high. Nowadays, we have more plastic in our ocean than fish, which is more than sad and we can’t ignore the fact that every single one of us is responsible for what is happening on the planet, earth.

The ocean cleanup is a Dutch start-up company focusing on our biggest problem, which is the world’s „ocean garbage patches“. In 2016, the 24-year old developer Boyan Slat and his employees introduced their first prototype, which was successfully tested in the Dutch coast. The first stop is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (the size of the patch is three times as big as the size of France).

Cleaning up the Pacific Ocean is not simple, the ocean is big and using conventional methods like vessels and nets would take thousands of years. With the help of the new system, the start-up company estimates to clean up the ocean to 50 % in just 5 years. For more information and donation, you can check out their website.

  • every year 1,000,000 seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals die, due to our plastic waste
  • In most parts of our ocean, there is six times more plastic than plankton
  • one plastic bottle needs 450 years to fully dissolve, but it still does not disappear, it just dissolves itself into small plastic particles – sadly most animals mistake it for plankton
  • an average of only 7 % of plastic bags are being recycled in Europe

How can I help?

Plastic can be found in nearly everything we use nowadays. In our food, car, phone, hygiene products and in our apartments. Everyone can help by following easy steps in our everyday life. In order to decrease the plastic waste in our environment, we must start living sustainably.

Here are some tips on how to live with less plastic

Reusable produce bags

Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit centre for Marine Conservation. (Source)
We can do better than this and start using a reusable bag every time we go shopping, whether if it’s groceries or clothes.

Avoid Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles are a huge problem for our environment, it takes 500 – 1,000 years for plastic to degrade which is insane. Use reusable bottles and coffee cups. A lot of different coffee shops and other brands offer a wide range of reusable and portable coffee cups.

Give up gum

To be honest, before I started my research for this blog post I had no Idea about how bad chewing gums are for our environment and the human body. But it is quite simple, chewing gum was originally made of chicle, which is a latex sap of the sapodilla tree. Later on, scientists created a synthetic rubber and replaced hence the natural rubber. Which means we are chewing on plastic.

Disposable plasticware

Plastic knives, forks, spoons, and plates are hard to recycle and we should pay more attention to it especially when we order food online or buy a lunch in the supermarket across the street.

Reuse glass jars

You can find a wide range of prepared foods in glass jars, just like tomato sauce, jam, peanut butter etc. Instead of throwing the glass jars away you can reuse them to store food like cereal, flour etc.

Your lunchbox

Pack your lunch in reusable containers instead of plastic wraps. Avoid fruit in serving cups from the supermarket and pack fresh fruit for lunch.

Watch out for microplastic in shampoos

Unfortunately, a lot of hygiene products contain microplastic, whether if it is in our toothpaste, shampoo or makeup and face washes. Microplastic is everywhere, even in our clothes, but how can we spot if microplastic is involved? Next time you are out on your shopping spree, watch out for these ingredients: Polyester (PES), Polyamide (PA), Polyethylene (PE), Polyimide (PI), Acrylate (ANM) etc.

I can only recommend the CodeCheck App, where you can scan the barcode of a product and get a full list of the ingredients inside and how good and bad they are for our body.

Why me-time is so important

2018-09-09 025632394225687109439..jpgHello everyone! 🙂

Today I would like to write and think more about me-time and why it is so important. Now I know everyone is in school, working, going after hobbies and spending a lot of time with friends, family etc. There is nothing wrong with this, but I guess after a while everyone needs a break and a relaxed time by yourself.

Why is this so important?

We are constantly on our phones or laptops nowadays and online 24/7, which causes stress. We are afraid to miss out on something in the world. This is why we keep checking our phones up to 88 times a day. But this is exactly why we need to hit the pause button and learn to enjoy a little time without our mobile phones. Being stressed in the long run is seriously damaging our health, especially today where we need to give 100 % to our Jobs and success. This is exactly why we would need some time by ourselves to recharge.

How can I make time for myself?

One thing you can do to create me-time is simply by waking up earlier. I love to wake up a little earlier to drink my morning coffee in peace and just relax before the day starts. Waking up earlier has a lot of benefits. First of all, your phone would not ring all the time, because the rest of the world might still be asleep. This is the best way to charge your batteries and get enough of Energy for a long day.

Now another scenario would be: You spent the whole week at work, school etc. After that, you meet your friends, family…going out and meeting people is fun and I would never say that this is a bad thing, but after a while, you feel tired and you come to the conclusion that you need a little time for yourself.

What can you do in your me-time?

Take a whole day off on the weekend and create a special me-time day just for yourself. Do whatever makes you happy, you could go shopping by yourself or just stay at home with your favorite book and tea and enjoy the quietness of your own. Of course, the definition of me-time is different for everyone. If you would rather go out for a walk with your dog, or go to the gym, it is up to you.  Watch your favorite Netflix show, eat your favorite food or just relax with a face mask on watching a movie. There are no rules for me-time. Enjoy the time by yourself, leave your phone in another room or put it on airplane mode. Whatever makes you happy to disconnect and feel comfortable on your own is the perfect me-time for you.

How do you like to spend your me-time? 🙂

Je t’aime paris – My trip to Paris

Hello everyone! 🙂

I recently got back from Paris and it is safe to say that I fell in love with this city. Paris owns my heart and I would definitely go back! To see more pictures, visit my Instagram and check them out as well as my Story Highlight —> ivvkr

But first I would like to share my very own Paris experience.

Public Transport
If you are in Paris or planning to visit this wonderful city, I would highly recommend you to use the public transport. This is the best way to get to know the vibe of this city and feel like a real Parisian. In addition to this, you can easily reach the sightseeing spots by public transport and it is, of course, cheaper like this. One ticket for the subway e.g. costs approximately € 1,70, which is a fair price.

Food, drinks etc.
When people think of Paris they probably think of cheese, baguettes, croissants and so on…And I have to agree, the food in Paris great. A nice idea would be to visit a local supermarket and buy some cheese, fruits, and wine and just enjoy a picnic in front of the Eiffel tower or at the Pont Alexandre III. If you wanna visit a Restaurant you can find plenty of them near the Eiffel tower or you download the TripAdvisor App and check some Restaurants near you.

So, now one of my personal highlights in Paris. I have to admit this Museum impressed me a lot. It is the best Museum I have visited so far. It offers a wide ranch of paintings (215 works), Sculptures (83 works), Egyptian Antiquities (207 works) and many more. I am a huge fan of different cultures and history and I literally spent the whole day in this Museum to cover all departments. I bought my Ticket online on for approximately 17,-, and I highly recommend to book your Tickets for different activities before your trip.

Palais de Versailles

When I planned my Paris trip, the Palace of Versailles was already on my list. I really wanted to see this incredible Palace in real life and I am so glad I did. To come to the Palace you need to take a bus for approximately half an hour because the Palace is not located in Paris, it is located in the neighbouring city called Versailles. But first some Information. The Palace of Versailles is one of Europes biggest Palaces and was the main residence of the Royal Family until the French revolution took place from 1789 on. Moreover, the Palace is marvellous and a must see when in Versailles.

Disneyland Paris

Last but not least, my childhood dream. Since I can think I always wanted to visit Disneyland in Paris. My first reaction to it was that I felt like a little kid again, I was surrounded by little girls wearing their favourite princess dress. The park is really incredible, I was overwhelmed by all the colours and impressions. If you plan on going to Disneyland you should definitely stay until midnight. The midnight show was an experience I could never forget. I just have to say that Disneyland is not only for children. It is an experience for the young and old and definitely worth it.

5 Tips on how to be a successful student

School has started and everyone around me seems kind of motivated just like I am. To be honest, I cannot wait to start studying again and of course, I wanna be a great student and have my stuff together. But how do you keep yourself motivated? And what tips are useful? Here are some tips, which are easy to remember and will help you get through the semester and stay focused.

  1. Get organized
Use a calendar to write down important due dates and check it daily before and after class, you can also use a diary or a little organizer where you write yourself a to-do list for the day or week. However, if you prefer to have a digital calendar or an organizer, you can download an app called Trello on your laptop or any other organizing app you can find in the app store or Google play store.
  2. Sit in the front row
Now I know this might not work everytime you will be in class but even if it is the second or third row it will have a positive impact on your grades. Sitting in the front row during class can increase your motivation and you won’t get distracted so easily. I know that not every student enjoys sitting in the front row in the lecture room but just give it a try and see how it works for you during the course of the semester.
  3. Study groups
If you struggle with one subject, create a study group with your friends! It can help you a lot. Whether it is maths, history etc. There are a lot of benefits in a study group, you can prepare for the big test by asking each other questions, reviewing important materials together and solving difficulties together.
  4. Keep your notes sorted in different binders and colors
Buy yourself different binders for different classes and keep them all in order. It is much easier to collect and organize your notes you make during class in this way.
  5. Ask questions
You are in school to learn, therefore don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand something in class. In the end, it is always better to ask and understand the case than to sit at home and not having a clue on how to do your homework.

I hope these tips will help you survive the school year or semester and I wish you all a nice start to the new school year. 🙂

One Week sailing through Croatia

Hello everyone and welcome back!

Today, the experience I had on my first ever Sailing Tour through Croatia.

First of all, I have to say that Croatia is a beautiful country with a lot of personalities and interesting history behind the old towns.

This is for all the „Games of Thrones“ fans! Dubrovnik is an incredibly beautiful city. The old town is filled with traditional restaurants, which offer tasty and fresh fish and seafood. It is safe to say that Croatia is like heaven to all the seafood lovers out there. In Dubrovnik, you should definitely go up the stairs to the castle. Up there you can play basketball with a fascinating view over the city. Dubrovnik is definitely an incredible city with a lot of nice restaurants, bars and of course a wonderful location to take nice pictures. I would visit this city one more time and stay a little longer.

Croatian Islands

So now I would like to introduce these cute little islands to you. On this Sail, I have visited quite a lot of Islands, which I didn’t even know about. The first island I would like to introduce is a small island named Hvar. This island has something magical in it. The beaches are wonderful and the old town is just breathtaking.

Mljet National Park

A nice bicycle ride in a National Park sounds great am I right? Sure, especially if you can have a refreshing swim stop in-between. Welcome to Mljet National Park, where the lake is blue and the nature just marvelous.

Split is certainly worth the visit for its incredible old town and beautiful beaches. The historical city should be on your travel list, especially the Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian. The beautiful old town with traditional restaurants in their tiny side streets. Whether you like traditional Croatian food or Mexican dish, there is something for everyone in Split.

Albertina Museum
